Het is natuurlijk al lang en breed bekend dat er enkele gevierde Apollo astronauten zijn die in tegenstelling tot onze duurzame druiloren Wubbo Ockels en André Kuipers (shame on them!) uitgesproken klimaatsceptici zijn. Nu is er alleen een fraaie open brief aan de NASA Charles Bolden met maar liefst 50 namen van 50 gepensioneerde NASA zwaargewichten.

Dear Charlie,

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that NASA and the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) refrain from including unproven remarks in public releases and websites. We believe the claims by NASA and GISS, that man-made carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated, especially when considering thousands of years of empirical data. With hundreds of well-known climate scientists and tens of thousands of other scientists publicly declaring their disbelief in the catastrophic forecasts, coming particularly from the GISS leadership, it is clear that the science is NOT settled.

The unbridled advocacy of CO2 being the major cause of climate change is unbecoming of NASA’s history of making an objective assessment of all available scientific data prior to making decisions or public statements.

As former NASA employees, we feel that NASA’s advocacy of an extreme position, prior to a thorough study of the possible overwhelming impact of natural climate drivers is inappropriate. We request that NASA refrain from including unproven and unsupported remarks in its future releases and websites on this subject. At risk is damage to the exemplary reputation of NASA, NASA’s current or former scientists and employees, and even the reputation of science itself.

Wat mij betreft mag het ene of andere kamerlid met deze brief en deze namen in de hand nu opheldering vragen over de voortgang van de reactie op het verzoek van de recente Nederlandse open brief aan de KNAW met betrekking tot hun klimaatbrochure voor de Tweede Kamer. En tevens zou ik dan KNMI en PBL laten reageren op de brief aan NASA.

Het allergekste is dat er eigenlijk maar 2 echte boosdoeners zijn binnen NASA: James Hansen en Gavin Schmidt.

De eerste is net op tournee in Groot-Brittannië waar hij een wetenschappelijke prijs in ontvangst mag nemen. In het voorprogramma roept de man die zich protesterend zowel bij kolencentrales als recent ook bij de Keystone XL pipeline liet arresteren, wederom op tot een wereldregering die de globale economie compleet plat gaat taxeren.

Op zich waardeer ik Hansen om zijn eerlijkheid. Hij heeft volkomen gelijk dat alle huidige CO2-maatregelen slechts cosmetisch zijn. Hij is recht door zee. Hij gelooft zijn eigen doemverhaal (lijkt me) en eist doeltreffende actie. In dit artikel in de Guardian lees je zijn visie. Grappig zijn de twee totaal uiteenlopende reacties hierop van de Amerikaan Anthony Watts en de Tsjech Lubos Motl.

De eerste schrijft in het artikel Hansen off the rails:

There’s not a whole lot I can say about this, except that I’m looking forward to his retirement soon. Then, he can speak as a “private citizen” as much as he wants.

De tweede die reageert meer vanuit het hart en schiet uit de heup:

I don’t know about other countries but I am confident that if he actually started to dilute sovereignty of the Czech Republic, there would be a political near-consensus in my country that he has become as legitimate a target of special operations as Reinhard Heydrich who had very similar goals and who had to be executed by the Czechoslovak government. Comments like “one has to take the power to control their territory” from the individual nations is just something you shouldn’t have ever spitted from your dirty mouth, Mr Hansen. These are very serious matters you should better not joke about.

Met een moeder die in de DDR opgroeide, begrijp ik Motls bittere woorden. Toch sluit ik me liever aan bij Watts die een “biologische oplossing” voorstaat. Hoe lang nog tot in Nederland Vellinga, Ockels, Van Dieren, Samsom et al. verbitterde tandeloze oude mannetjes zijn?
