Het is altijd een genoegen te luisteren naar sprekers met een helder, kort en bondig verhaal, in het bijzonder wanneer het politici betreft. En dat geldt al helemaal wanneer dat verhaal over klimaat gaat. Een lichtend voorbeeld daarvan was de recente interventie van de conservatieve MP David Davies in het Britse Parlement.

Hij geeft daarin duidelijk aan dat de term klimaat’ontkenners’ nergens op slaat, omdat zij niet ontkennen dat CO2 een broeikasgas is en evenmin dat er enige opwarming heeft plaatsgevonden. Datzelfde geldt voor de opvatting dat menselijke CO2–emissies enig effect op de temperatuur hebben gehad. Maar daaruit volgt nog niet noodzakelijkerwijs dat antropogeen CO2 de oorzaak (‘completely responsible’) is geweest van de geringe stijging van de temperatuur gedurende de afgelopen 250 jaar. En zo ging hij nog zeven minuten door.

Hij werd onderbroken door een lid van de oppositie die beweerde dat het VN–klimaatpanel (IPCC) had gesteld dat 100% van de opwarming van de aarde gedurende de afgelopen 60 jaar aan de menselijke uitstoot van CO2 diende te worden toegeschreven. Met de betreffende passage van het laatste IPCC–rapport in de hand kon Davies aantonen dat dit een misvatting was.

Een van de commentaren op zijn speech was: ‘There was more sense spoken in that short delivery to the House than there has been in the last 20 years.’
Maar de ‘Royal Society’ (de Britse KNAW) blijft zich maar als apostel van het broeikasevangelie opstellen.

Onder de titel, ‘We’ll All Be Dead Before Climate Change Orgs Admit They’re Wrong’ Says MP’ schreef Oliver Lane voor Breitbart:

Member of Parliament David Davies has warned of the stubborn nature of organisations like Britain’s Royal Society – the oldest grouping of eminent scientists in the world – who have admitted that they will not accept any other thinking on global warming for at least “fifty years”, even if the data shows otherwise.

Attending a speech on climate change in the House of Lords, the Welsh Tory MP spoke about on his surreal experience meeting two men from the Royal Society whom he said had been sent to persuade him and fellow climate realists Peter Lilley MP and John Redwood MP to embrace the idea of man-made climate change. He said that representatives from the Society – often lauded as the most eminent grouping of scientists, founded in the 1600s – told him that they would not change their mind for at least fifty years, regardless of the evidence.

After the meeting, which was chaired by Margaret Thatcher’s former Chancellor Lord Lawson, and also attended by former environment Secretary Owen Paterson MP, Davies Spoke to Breitbart London and recalled the extraordinary admission made by the Royal Society to him as they addressed members of parliament.

Speaking of the ‘hiatus’ in global warming that has been observed since the end of the 20th century, and the doubt that it has cast on climate change modelling – points which had been discussed at length at the Global Warming Policy Foundation event – Davies remarked:

“They had two guys whose job it was to go around and persuade everyone that we’re all trying the ruin the economy.

“We pinned them down on this hiatus … they were arguing that yes, there might have been a hiatus, but warming might be going into the ocean, or it could be due to volcanic activity. So we asked at what point would you begin to accept there had been no warming. If there is no warming for five years, or ten years?

“Finally they conceded they would wait fifty years.

Wetenschappers die hun hypothesen niet aan de werkelijkheid wensen te toetsen, plaatsen zich buiten de wetenschap en begeven zich op het terrein van de pseudo–wetenschap. Het is een uiterst verontrustende ontwikkeling dat ook leden van de ‘Royal Society’ meegaan in dit soort praktijken.

Ondertussen heeft de Amerikaanse opiniepeiler ‘Pew’ de Amerikanen ondervraagd naar hun opvattingen over klimaatverandering en in het licht van Laudate Si, in het bijzonder de katholieke Amerikanen. Het bleek dat die verdeelde opvattingen hadden over deze kwestie en deze week niet ver af van die van Amerikanen in het algemeen.

Moeten de sceptici onder hen zich dan voortaan buitengesloten voelen van hun kerk? Nee, dat blijkt niet het geval te zijn

Onder de titel, ‘Pope Francis’ climate change encyclical not binding on Catholics’, verspreidde het ‘Institute of Public Affairs’ een toelichting van Father James Grant op de encycliek Laudate Si:

Pope Francis’ encyclical on climate change should not be treated as official Catholic doctrine binding on all Catholics, but rather a personal position of the Pope, according to Father James Grant, Adjunct Fellow at the Institute of Public Affairs.

“Many will see the Pope’s encyclical as the official position of the Church on the area of climate change. This is simply not the case,” says Father James.

“An encyclical is meant to provide spiritual guidance from the Pope on a particular subject, for bishops to then discuss with their faithful. In Catholic doctrine, it is completely acceptable for Catholics to disagree with the opinions of the Pope in an encyclical.”

“So while the encyclical will hold significant weight in the Catholic community, there is nothing new in the debate regarding encyclicals. Catholics can feel safe in being sceptical about the Pope’s opinions,” says Father James.

Ik vermoed dat vele oprechte en weldenkende katholieken deze toelichting als een opluchting zullen ervaren. Het toont ook aan dat de RK Kerk zich verrassenderwijs in deze minder dogmatisch opstelt dan de ‘Royal Society’.
