Any serious conversation about the planet’s climate and our energy future must begin, paradoxically, with a backward look at geologic time. The reason for this is that the way forward is fogged by misunderstandings about the earth. Experts are little help in the constant struggle in this conversation to separate myth from reality, because they have the same difficulty, and routinely demonstrate it by talking past each other. Respected scientists warn of imminent energy shortages as geologic fuel supplies run out. Wall Street executives dismiss their predictions as myths and call for more drilling. Environmentalists describe the destruction to the earth from burning coal, oil, and natural gas. Economists ignore them and describe the danger to the earth of failing to burn coal, oil, and natural gas. Geology researchers report fresh findings about what the earth was like millions of years ago. Creationist researchers report fresh findings that the earth didn’t exist millions of years ago. The only way not to get lost in this awful swamp is to review the basics and decide for yourself what you believe and what you don’t.

1:06 p.m. | Updated Stephen H. Schneider, a Stanford University climate scientist who for decades built the case that global warming, while laden with complexity, justified an aggressive response, has died. Ralph Cicerone, the president of the National Academy of Sciences, of which Schneider was a longtime member, said he had confirmed the news. [10:14 p.m. | Updated Stanford University has posted an obituary. Realclimate.org has posted an appreciation of Schneider written by Benjamin Santer of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.]
Schneider, who was 65, spent decades studying the forces influencing climate and the policy implications of human-driven warming, as well as pressing the case for action to curb emissions of greenhouse gases even as he battled and subdued a rare cancer in recent years. In an e-mail message to a group of contacts, his wife, Terry Root, a biologist at Stanford, said it appeared that he died of a heart attack today as a flight he was on was landing in London.
Watts Up With That verwijst naar een recent opgenomen interview met Michael Mann. Het is tien minuten, maar meer dan de moeite waard. Mann is flink in zijn nopjes omdat hij voor de vijfde keer vrijgesproken is van onbetamelijk gedrag. Tijd om eens flink terug te slaan dus.

Was climategate een storm in een glas water of een ‘mushroom cloud’, zoals Patrick Michaels vlak na het vrijkomen van de e-mails beweerde? Vier ‘onafhankelijke’ onderzoeken verder (drie in Engeland en een van Penn State) zijn we feitelijk nog geen stap verder gekomen met het beantwoorden van die vraag. Want afhankelijk van de positie die je inneemt in het debat vond je toen en vind je nu nog steeds dat het of een storm in een glas water was of dat het een mushroom cloud was.
Anthony Watts merkt in mijn ogen terecht op dat bij het Russell onderzoek veel mensen betrokken werden, behalve de aanklager:
The investigations thus far are much like having a trial with judge, jury, reporters, spectators, and defendant, but no plaintiff. The plaintiff is locked outside the courtroom sitting in the hall hollering and hoping the jury hears some of what he has to say. Muir Russell rapport
Net als Damian Carrington open ik een ‘live blog’ voor alle ontwikkelingen rond het rapport van Muir Russell, het derde en naar verwachting belangrijkste Britse rapport over climategate. Interessante commentaren zal ik omhoog halen naar het blogbericht. Wie leest er het snelst 160 pagina’s?
Acht maanden na climategate is het nog steeds niet duidelijk of het om een hacker of klokkenluider gaat. Andy Revkin vernam van diverse betrokken wetenschappers dat ze ondervraagd waren door de Britse politie, maar die wil verder nog geen mededelingen doen over de zaak:
Norfolk Constabulary continues its investigations into the alleged criminal offences in relation to the data breach at the University of East Anglia. During the enquiry officers have been working with various specialist organizations. The U.E.A. also continues to co-operate with our enquiries. However, this is a major investigation which involves detailed enquiries which are still being followed up. It would be inappropriate for us to comment any further at this stage.
Tom Wigley van NCAR weet het antwoord echter al:
Yes, I have been in touch with the Norwich police. They contacted me and asked a bunch of questions. So there IS awareness that the hacking was a crime. But … who did it? What can anyone do if there are no clues? Second, by now the cops should have figured out that this *was* a crime. They investigated the “in house” aspect at length as far as I can see, and have had plenty of time to figure out whether this “deliberate leak” option was supported by any evidence. So … no comment on this is pretty deplorable. One problem is that this crime is way outside their areas of expertise. They needed expert advice on hacking. Whether they sought this I do not know, but my contacts with them give me no evidence that they did…
Het aftellen is begonnen, niet voor de finale van zondag, maar voor het rapport van Muir Russell over climategate. Het rapport zal om 14 uur Nederlandse tijd vrijgegeven worden. Enkele Britse journalisten hebben het onder embargo gekregen. Voor de echte diehards is hier een blog om vandaag te volgen.
De journalist in kwestie, Damian Carrington, schreef om 12 uur Nederlandse tijd dat het rapport 160 pagina’s dik is:
11.00am: Now I hate to be a tease, but I have just got a copy of the Muir Russell review – under pain-of-death embargo until 1pm. So I can’t say more but it has led me to my first reverse ferret of the day of the day: the report is 160 pages long, not 500.

De gewraakte IPCC-grafiek
Hoewel mijn eerste indruk van het PBL-rapport gematigd positief is (gematigd omdat ik de opdracht om alleen naar acht hoofdstukken over regionale klimaatverandering te kijken weinig interessant vond, maar dat kunnen we de auteurs verder niet aanrekenen natuurlijk), zijn de eerste foutjes alweer ontdekt.
Roger Pielke jr laat op zijn blog weten dat het PBL een claim van het IPCC over schade door orkanen ten onrechte heeft goedgekeurd. Lees verder »
