Joanne Nova legt uit waarom Rio+20 toch een doorslaand succes is

Erg grappig bovenstaande video van CFACT vanaf de Rio+20 conferentie, waar Senator Inhofe en Marc Morano wél maar president Obama en Angela Merkel níet aanwezig waren. Men heeft dus geen idee wat “sustainability” betekent (behalve dan…. ehhhh….. iets met “meer fietsen in Kopenhagen”).

Welnu, ik zal een handje helpen: “sustainability” is een heel prima woord. Veel beter dan ons woord “duurzaamheid” dat mij altijd doet denken aan een soort Henk en Ingrid onbehagen en wens terug te keren naar de jaren 50 waarvoor je dan weer Gerard Reve moet lezen om te ontdekken dat dat ook geen fijne tijd was. “Duurzaam” voelt als “stilstand”.

Nee, dan “sustainability!”. Letterlijk vertaald: “Onderhoudbaarheid”. Dat doet me denken aan een kampvuur….. dat “onderhoudbaar” is zolang de voorraadstapel brandhout niet kleiner wordt omdat houtsprokkelaars er net zo veel op gooien als ik er weer afhaal om in het vuur te gooien. Of denk aan een auto: zolang ik nog voldoende geld op de bank heb en ik met de laatste liters benzine binnen bereik ben van een tankstation, is dat “onderhoudbaar”. Of de aarde an sich: zo lang de zon nog niet is opgebrand en de waterthermostaat het hier lekker leefbaar houdt is plekje in het universum onderhoudbaar… kunnen we dankzij de krankzinnige stroom van hoogwaardige energie in (zonlicht) en laagwaardige energie uit (infrarood) de uiteindelijk onvermijdelijke toename van entropie voor een tijdje keren en hedonistisch genieten van een paar miljard jaar locale entropieverlaging. Waarbij deelsystemen zoals landen, bedrijven, talen, families, religies op veel kortere tijdschalen steeds zullen ontstaan, een tijdje zullen bloeien en dan weer ten onder gaan.

“Sustainability” is dus hét TIJDELIJKE antwoord op de uiteindelijk onvermijdelijke toename van entropie. De milieubeweging heeft er echter een soort toverwoord van gemaakt dat ons in de waan laat dat absoluut goed en kwaad bestaat zoals kolencentrale=fout en windmolen=goed. Om met dergelijke simpele schema’s een kaartje voor een plekje in de hemel te bemachtigen. Als de mensen in de video eerlijk antwoord hadden gegeven hadden ze gezegd: “Duurzaamheid is mijn mantra waarmee ik hoop te ontsnappen aan de sterfelijkheid”, want ik heb net David Goldman gelezen en weet dat wat wij onszelf ook wijs maken, onze verhouding tot de sterfelijkheid meer dan wat ook ons gedrag bepaalt.

Van dat boek “How civilizations die” van Goldman wordt je toch al niet vrolijk want hij haalt Augustinus aan die de ondergang van Rome bestudeerde en die concludeerde: “Staten falen als de bevolking faalt en de bevolking faalt als ze van de verkeerde dingen houdt”. Duurzaamheid in de door de milieubeweging verdraaide zin van het woord lijkt me nu typisch zo’n “verkeerd ding” waarmee je welvarende landen aan de bedelstaf kunt brengen. Dus wat mij betreft zsm terug naar een gezond begrip van duurzaamheid (onderhoudbaarheid):

Alles wat lekker voelt en op een realistische middellange termijn stand kan houden, zonder ons ene jota te bekommeren over de lange termijn…. (omdat op die lange termijn steeds verrassende vruchtbare serendipity een rol gaat spelen waar je nu als je eerlijk bent toch niets zinnigs over kunt zeggen…)

Afsluitend nog even mijn antwoord op de vraag van die zuurzame WWF-vrouw Carina Hansson in die video: “Denk in je eigen leven eens aan wat je gelukkig maakt”…. nu kan ik daar zwijmelig in meegaan en zeggen dat dit een lach is van mijn driejarige dochtertje ongeacht de materiële welvaart die ik geniet…. maar nee…. mijn eerlijke antwoord is: Lees verder »

‘Climategate’, ‘Amazongate’ – when will the truth be told?

Critical evidence from climate change sceptics continues to be ignored by the political and scientific establishments, says Christopher Booker

What are we to make of the efforts by the political and academic establishments to hold the line against all those revelations, such as “Climategate”, which last winter rocked the authority of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change? The most obvious feature of the four official inquiries into the “Climategate” emails (a fifth report is due this week from Sir Muir Russell), is that not one has engaged with the central point at issue. This is the evidence from the emails and other documents confirming that the key IPCC scientists involved had been manipulating data to show temperatures having lately shot up to levels unknown in the past 1,000 years.

A familiar example was the IPCC’s “hockey stick” graph, created by the American scientist Michael Mann, but shown by the statistics expert Steve McIntyre to be no more than a statistical artefact. Last week, a second inquiry by his own university cleared Dr Mann, again making no attempt to discuss the central issue. Instead, it merely asserted – while acclaiming him as “among the most respected scientists in his field” – that the techniques used to compile his graph were wholly acceptable. Similarly, McIntyre was startled last week to get a dismissive email from Lord Oxburgh, whose Science Appraisal Panel also avoided the crucial issue in its perfunctory five-page report, bizarrely claiming that “the science was not the subject of our study”.

Charles Darwin zealots have made science a substitute religionAlso defending the establishment line was last week’s Panorama, with its “inquiry” into Climategate. This example of BBC propaganda at its most childish purported to be impartial, by pitching two advocates of man-made global warming against two “sceptics”, who turned out to be believers in man-made warming. Its centrepiece was yet another vindication of the “hockey stick”, including a sycophantic interview with Dr Mann. Again, this gave not the faintest idea of how devastatingly the methods used to compile this graph have been challenged (for full accounts see A W Montford’s The Hockey Stick Illusion: Climategate and the Corruption of Science, or my book The Real Global Warming Disaster).

Meanwhile, there has been a further twist to that other IPCC scandal, “Amazongate”, on which I reported last week. This centred on the claim in its 2007 report – attributed only to a paper from green activists at the WWF – that a slight reduction in rainfall caused by climate change could kill up to 40 per cent of the Amazon rainforest. After exhaustive analysis by my colleague Dr Richard North of every document cited by the WWF to back its claim, it seems clearer than ever that there is no good evidence.

I have given the WWF one more chance to come up with that evidence, and will reveal its response next week. If it is unable to do so, the IPCC will again be convicted of having made a wildly alarmist claim it cannot justify. Yet this is the body on whose allegedly unimpeachable scientific authority our Government and others propose to land us with the biggest bill in history.

Clean energy: wanted everywhere but in the latest G20 text

Toronto, Canada – The G20 leaders conference has wound down to a disappointing close in Canada, failing to build on last year’s commitments to phase out fossil fuel subsidies and downgrading mentions of clean energy from eight mentions in their Pittsburgh communique to none from over the border in Toronto.

Sustainable economic recovery will need more than brief platitudes about green recovery, WWF warned on noting the lack of significant commitments on climate change, climate finance or even the G20-nominated issue of inefficient fossil fuel subsidies.

“The world leaders are still painting the economy in black and white. But the 21st century economy must include green,” said Kim Carstensen, the leader of WWF’s Global Climate Initiative.

“The greenest thing about the G20 is its ability to reuse and recycle earlier commitments. This summit could have been the beginning of real action towards a clean, efficient and resilient economy but all we got is some nice words about green economy and a recycled statement on fossil fuel subsidies”

At the 2009 Pittsburgh G20 summit leaders committed to “Rationalize and phase out over the medium term inefficient fossil fuel subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption”.

“This year’s G20 Statement repeats this commitment, and leaders “…encourage continued and full implementation of country-specific strategies and will continue to review progress towards this commitment.”

Carstensen said, “Reforming fossil fuel subsidies is an obvious win-win solution for the environment and the economy, and it is encouraging that the issue will remain on the G20 agenda. But in Canada the leaders failed to take the next step to indicate their global level of ambition and agree a clear timeline to achieve what they promise.”

India takes a lead
However, one bright spot was India this week translating talk into action, announcing a phase out of fossil fuel subsidies on petrol and reviewing subsidies on diesel and other fossil fuels.

This week India’s example shows that there is surely a will in a number of countries, but to push the global agenda, we still need a stronger ambition and deadlines on phasing out fossil fuel subsidies which account for more than US$500 billion a year globally.”

As the G20 meeting wound down, the final reference to “clean energy” was dropped from the text.

“They went through this document with a vacuum cleaner to remove any reference to clean energy,” Carstensen said. “In the Pittsburgh G20 summit, there were 8 references to “clean energy” – in this one, there is zero. This is demonstrative of the host country’s lack of drive and ambition on empowering a shift to renewable energy.”

The G20 also did not agree any initiatives that could help provide funds to meet the cost of climate change action in the poorest countries. The move by German Chancellor Merkel and French President Sarkozy to advance the discussion on financial transaction taxes (FTT) was shoved aside by the G20. If FTTs were adopted globally, they would have the potential to generate much needed finance for development and environmental issues while forking out for the economy.

“G20 leaders say that they are the premier forum for international economic cooperation.

If they are serious about this, they need to also discuss how to generate the funds urgently needed to help vulnerable countries cope with climate change.”

Canada has played a highly unhelpful role as hosts of the summit, consistently ignoring calls from world leaders to allocate time for meaningful discussion of climate change.

“Canada did not succeed in keeping climate change off the G20 agenda but as host, they must be seen as the major reason why it has not been possible to move beyond repetition of last year’s agreements,” said Zoë Caron, Climate Policy and Advocacy Specialist, WWF Canada.

The G20 missed an opportunity to become a relevant global player on climate and energy. South Korea has a big gap to fill at the next G20 summit in November.

Op de valreep van zijn vertrek naar KPMG heeft Yvo de Boer bekend gemaakt dat de organisatie die hij jarenlang leidde (UNFCCC, de moederorganisatie van het IPCC) geen pecunia meer heeft om twee reeds geplande voorrondes te financieren.

“A number of countries made pledges for additional financial support,” he told reporters. “Some countries have followed up on those pledges and actually transferred the money, but we need more of those pledges to materialise before we can safely say there is enough in the bank to organise the additional meetings and fund the participation of people from developing countries.” Lees meer…

Tja, misschien moet Yvo’s opvolger, de Costaricaanse Christiana Figueres, het boek van bovenstaande toepasselijke cover-afbeelding eens lezen. Want dat nieuwe voorrondes nodig zullen zijn voor Cancun is duidelijk. In Bonn, waar slechts 4500 gedelegeerden bijeen zijn gekomen (een laagterecord), lopen de onderhandelingen momenteel spaak op dezelfde groep groep Zuid-Amerikaanse ALBA-landen die ook in Copenhagen dwars lagen. Deze landen willen Kyoto niet loslaten.

A number of countries have refused to support the Copenhagen Accord, which was thrashed out by the US, Brazil, South Africa, India and China, arguing that it favours rich nations, risks sidelining the existing Kyoto Protocol, and fails to set targets for curbing greenhouse gas emissions.

Aware of these concerns the Ad Hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action (AWG-LCA), chaired by Zimbabwean diplomat Margaret Mukahanana-Sangarwe, included only elements of the Copenhagen Accord in the new formal negotiating text alongside a host of different options.

Jonathan Pershing, head of the US delegation, told Reuters that the latest text was only intended as “a constructive next step” towards developing a formal negotiating text.

However, the move appears to have again antagonised the ALBA group and work is now underway to develop an alternative draft text that is expected to be presented before the end of the week.

The in-coming UN climate chief, Christiana Figueres, who it is hoped will help improve relations between industrialised and developing countries, recently expressed some sympathy for the ALBA group, telling Bloomberg that she shared their concerns about the Copenhagen Accord.

“Many of their concerns are very legitimate and shared not just by the immediate members of the ALBA countries but actually by quite a few countries around the world,” she said.

Na 1 juli zullen we zien welke troeven Figueres uit de hoge hoed kan toveren om van deze warboel nog iets te maken. Of wordt het toch “Tikkie terug Jaap?”. Het heeft er alle schijn van dat Kyoto het laatste omvattende en nooit meer vernieuwde klimaatakkoord zal blijken te zijn. WWF: Expect Snowfalls in July!

Moeder Aarde blijkt toch niet meer boos te zijn

Net als je denkt dat Climategate onder ‘onafhankelijke onderzoeken’bedolven zal worden, is daar plotseling het artikel in The Times over James Lovelock.

De 90 jarige chemicus is beroemd, omstreden maar bovenal wetenschapper die bekend werd met zijn theorie dat de aarde een levend organisme is: Gaia.
Biologen als Lynn Margulis hebben aan deze theorie een biologisch symbiotisch randje gegeven, door hun vergelijkende werk aan micro-organismen. Lovelock was altijd fulltime-klimaatalarmist, bracht jaarlijks boektitels uit als ‘The Burning Rage of a Dying Planet’. Moeder Aarde zou boos zijn op ons mensen, en ons met stormen, vloed en vulkanen van de aarde vegen.

Alarmisten er uit, normale wetenschappers er in

Roger Pielke besteedt kritisch aandacht aan belangenverstrengeling bij het IPCC. Doen er mensen mee aan het proces die financieel profiteren van klimaatoverdrijving?
Ook Duits klimaatwetenschapper Hans von Storch ziet het lozen van fondswervende bedrijven als een belangrijke stap om bij Werkgroep 2 van het IPCC iets van geloofwaardigheid terug te geven. Tenminste, dat stelde hij desgevraagd.

Fondswervende multinationals
Vaak zijn bedrijven als WWF en Greenpeace verantwoordelijk voor de stelselmatige klimaatoverdrijving in Werkgroep 2 van het IPCC. Daarom schreven we al eerder hoe steeds meer onwetenschappelijke campagnetermen als ‘catastrofe’, ‘gevaar’ en ‘kantelpunt’naar binnen glipten in het IPCC-rapport.
Nu zie je niet meer wanneer de campagnevoerder spreekt, en wanneer je nog mag spreken van ‘neutrale wetenschap’.

The whitefronted goose changes into the tundra bean goose with 2.9 degrees of warming

One interesting Lead Author in chapter 4 ‘Ecosystems, their properties goods and services’ from working group 2 of the IPCC is Jeff Price.
The birdwatcher and filmmaker is now WWF-Managing director for climate adaptation in the US, and responsible for several examples of questionable citing with an alarmist twist, all from WWF-literature and grey reports.
In box 4.5 on page 239 of the IPCC-report working group 2, we even find a form of miraculous bird evolution, where one species of goose can change into another by 2.9 degrees of warming, and suddenly represent 76 percent decline of all arctic waterfowl.

De strijd tegen sceptici is financieel gezien ook bij ons ongelijk verdeeld. Het WWF-klimaatlobbybureau in Brussel dat EU-politici beinvloedt, ontvangt jaarlijks alleen al ruim 7 ton ‘operating costs’.Dat bedrag komt naast een jaarlijkse kleine 9 miljoen aan projectsubsidies.

Volgens het IPCC kan een kolgans in een toendrarietgans veranderen en bedreigd worden door klimaatverandering. In ons land overwintert het dier met honderdduizenden en tegenwoordig is hij ook broedvogel

De IPCC-claim dat 76 procent van het broedgebied van alle arctische watervogels verloren gaat door klimaatverandering, hangt aan één ganzensoort uit één rapportstudie in opdracht van het Wereldnatuurfonds en het World Conservation Monitoring Centre. Niet de grijze campagneliteratuur is hier belangerijk, maar het goochelen met percentages.

Snelle evolutie bij temperatuurstijging

Waarom kiezen de IPCC-auteurs deze soort? Omdat de ganzensoort volgens dit rapport op afstand het beste presteert in de kunst van het achteruitgaan. De rest van de 25 behandelde soorten krijgen minder harde klappen van het enige klimaatmodel dat als basis dient voor de geciteerde getallen.Ook kan volgens het IPCC bij 2,9 graden temperatuurstijging de ene ganzensoort in de andere veranderen, omdat hij dan meer broedgebied verliest.
