Gaat BBC nu eindelijk zijn draai maken inzake klimaat?

Mijn trouwe lezers zullen zich herinneren dat de BBC zich altijd heeft opgesteld als een fervent apostel van het broeikasevangelie. Slechts zelden gaven zij podium aan opvattingen van klimaatsceptici. Vele media wereldwijd volgden de BBC daarin. Voor ‘onze’ Marcel Crok maakte de BBC een uitzondering.

Onder de titel, ‘Climate sceptics claim warming pause backs their view’, schreef Matt McGrath in september 2013:

The sceptics believe that this slowdown [Noot HL: De hiatus] is the most solid evidence yet that mainstream computer simulations of the Earth’s climate – climate models – are wrong.

These computer simulations are used to study the dynamics of the Earth’s climate and make projections about future temperature change.

“The sceptics now have a feeling of being on the winning side of the debate thanks to the pause,” said Marcel Crok, a Dutch author who accepts the idea that human activities warm the planet, but is sceptical about the scale of the effect.

“You are now starting to see a normalisation of climate science. Suddenly mainstream researchers, who all agree that greenhouse gases play a huge role, start to disagree about the cause of the pause.

“For me this is a relief, it is finally opening up again and this is good.”

De ‘normalisering’ van de klimatologie heeft tot dusver nog steeds op zich laten wachten. Maar de komst van de nieuwe Amerikaanse president werpt zijn schaduwen vooruit en plotseling weet McGrath zijn gesprekspartner van drie jaar geleden weer te vinden. In een stukje dat bol staat van kommer en kwel waarin fervente protagonisten van de menselijke broeikashypothese (AGW = ‘Anthropogenic Global Warming’) thans verkeren, omdat zij zich door de nieuwe Trump-administratie bedreigd voelen in hun broodwinning, schenkt hij opnieuw aandacht aan de opvattingen van Marcel Crok.

But some in this field believe that the change of administration is a good moment to review the type of scientific questions that US researchers are asking.

Marcel Crok is a Dutch science writer who doesn’t support the scientific consensus on climate change. He says that much of the research in the field takes place in an echo chamber and he welcomes the fact that the Trump administration will challenge this.

Mr Crok accepts that human emissions of carbon dioxide are warming the planet, but he questions the accepted view on how far and how rapidly temperatures will rise. Mainstream scientists, he says, rely on models that are over sensitive to carbon. He expects this to change under Trump.

He said: “What the field is trying to do is prove that the observational estimates are wrong and that the models are still right, and in my opinion this is exactly the problem. They should be more open minded, they should be open to the idea that the models are wrong!”

“I hope that under a Trump regime at least there would be more funding, because if the funding agencies ask these kind of questions they can stimulate research in other directions than proving that the models are right all the time.”
